One of the big changes I've tried to make this time is to pay more attention to character motivations and make the characters actually do things, rather than just having things happen and have the characters there as "talking heads" to explain things.
I have also surprised myself with some happy accidents in writing that have led me to write a prologue for the story that takes place within the main era of BSG that acts as a hint of what is to come within the story itself. I'll just say that there are quite a few story elements that seem reminiscent of the song "All Along the Watchtower".
I will continue with weekly updates, and as always, I continue to support the other fans who do their best to keep the series alive. I feel it is the duty of the fans to keep these series alive and show the producers that we do care. So say we all.

An Anti-Retconner's Guide to Cylon Models

One think that has always bugged me about some stories is the way certain events are contradicted later on. In the BSG miniseries we saw a classic Cylon that was later supposedly replaced by the Cylon Centurions from "BSG: Razor". Being a nerd, I try to reconcile certain continuity errors. Here is my guide to Cylon models in a way that retains the classic Cylons within the continuity.

Cylon models:
 -U-87 covers all cylons seen in season 1 of Caprica and the Cylon Centurions seen in the "Cain Flashback" from "BSG: Razor"
 -0005 mk1 is the "Pilot" model seen in "BSG: Razor",  is a slight improvement on the original U-87 design, and is also used as the main workforce for the Twelve Colonies

 -0005 mk2 is the "man-in-suit" Cylon seen in the BSG miniseries and the mural in Bill Adama's sleeping quarters (The 0005 mk1 is standing in the way of it in the episode "Daybreak"), these are often used in the Cylon war for missions requiring agility more than brute force

 -0005 mk3 is the type used in the upcomming BSG movie "Blood and Chrome" and is a complete derivation from the original Cylon outline

 -I-L model is the Cylon seen walking dogs in the "Shape of Things to Come" montage at the end of "Caprica: Apotheosis" and is used for more civilian purposes such as butlers until the Cylon war when their advanced programming made them useful as leaders within basestars. Models of this type existed even early on and can be seen as schematics on the Graystone family computer in season 1.

New Fan-Fic

I've begun writing an alternative to my original story. When I originally wrote the first Caprica story, I only had the summarization of the proposed Caprica Season 2 plot points and there was much I didn't understand or took out of context. The biggest change was the fact that I didn't understand the "Uncanny Valley" reference in The Caprica Times' interview with Kevin Murphy which was meant to be a major plot point of why it took three years to create the first "Skin Job" body for Zoe. All in all, the original story, upon re-reading, came across as heavy handed, derivative, and, at times, just plain naive. I decided that there were quite a few things that didn't make sense in my original story as well, including motivations for characters and the fact that Zoe had more than enough time to explain to Tamara what was going on in "Here be Dragons" making it unrealistic for Tamara to become the main antagonist. You will see the return of some characters from my first story; including Lucifer (though not in the same format). I decided to do some concept art (namely the chrome fedora) for my story.

I've also had a chance to read through the Caprica Times interview with Kevin Murphy (Show runner for Caprica Season 1.5) and realizeed just how far removed my story was from the original Caprica Season 2 plan (I used a summarization of the plot points from the BSG wiki site to base my story off of). It is my opinion that the original story plan is a much better story and have decided on a complete rewrite to better reflect the ideas shared by the original Caprica writing team. The End of Line: Writing the End of Caprica

There were many possible endings to this story. I will go through the ideas of each of them and why I decided against them.

Ending 1: Laura Roslin
The earliest idea I had for an ending would be for the Final Five to re-program Zoe to believe she was Laura Roslin. This idea was supposed to be a Romeo and Juliet sort of ending to the Adama/ Graystone feud.
As I looked into the back story of Laura Roslin though, there were just too many things standing in the way. Least of these problems was that, as fara as we know, Laura Roslin is geneetically related to her mother as both wind up dying of cancer. Then there was the problem of Gaius Baltar's Cylon detector and the fact that the idea just seemed like something that would wind up in a fan fiction and I was trying to go for a non fan-ficy fan-fiction.

Ending 2: Leaders of the Centurions
The second alternate ending would see Zoe Graystone and Tamara Adama leading the Cylon race to a new home. This idea was the one I was going with for the longest.
The problem with the idea was giving the story some diversity. I had been putting argument after argument into the story between Tamara and Zoe and just decided that, Tamara wasn't going to go off into space with Zoe quietly so I decided that both characters wind up on Earth instead of 'Cylon World'.

Ending 3: The 'Fun' Ending
This is the current ending. The idea to end with Zoe telling Lee Adama her story came from my love of stories that come full circle and the idea in the Messenger meeting epilogue that Caprica was a part of genetic memory. In the end though, I decided that we've had enough dark death and arguments and I should just have fun with the ending.

Evolution of a Character: Lucifer Revisited.

The idea of including a revisit of Lucifer from the original BSG was going to be a joke in the form of the name of a random Centurion in what later became the next chapter, but I decided to further flesh the character out into the manic lunatic that we now see.
The idea was to think of what he would be like as an actual person, then to completely rethink his personality. The cloak became a black suit with gold pin striping. The glowing cranium became a chrome hat that is meant to be reminiscent of a Cylon Centurion's head.
The idea of his obsession with pentagons came from the need to explain how the coaxial pentagons on the wings of Cylon Raiders became the Cylon logo. Then there was the idea of symbols in the series, the idea that Tamara Adama had her signature in V-world so Zoe needed her own. The joining of these ideas turned Lucifer into Zoe's biggest fan who is an insane Cylon put in charge of both Caprica and Caprica's V-world.
The influences on how I wrote the character were David Tennant's rambling and Michael Sheen's cane twirling from TRON.
In this story, the I-L series is the dog walking Cylon from the shape of things to come.

All in all, Lucifer wrote himself and deeply integrated himself into the story.

The Writing Process: Chapters 1 and 2

The idea for the story was to create a logical progression of events between Caprica Season 1 and the beginning of the Cylon war. I went through many different ideas about where to start the story from the day after the season 1 finale to directly into the five year fast forward seen in "The Shape of Things to Come". I eventually decided to look towards the ideas from the original producers about where they saw the story going.

Characters
I also had troubles trying to figure out where to take the character of Zoe Graystone but eventually decided that Zoe had decided to embrace her humanity and see herself more as a continuation of the Zoe that was killed in the pilot episode.

Inspiration
Being a Sci-Fi nerd, much of my inspiration came from various other stories. Mostly, many of the ideas came from the first season of Caprica and various opinions about the show including the idea that ressurection technology was a possible continuity error (The Final Five in BSG use such technology to end the First Cylon War) and the no stakes feeling given off by scenes set in v-world. Making such refferences is meant to be a nod towards the fans who followed the first season. I decided early on to do away with ressurection apart from using it to explain Zoe's new robot body. The idea is that the Ha'La'Tha gave up on Daniel's ressurection technology when they saw just how much of a success his Cylons were. Many other Sci-Fi series will be refferenced through use of plot ideas and a few quotes from IRobot to Blade Runner, Doctor Who, and Terminator so watch out for them as they appear.

Editing
As I said, many ideas went through my head. The idea to scrap Ressurection Technology was around since the beginning but how it would happen changed a few times. The original idea was to have Daniel Graystone meet with an ethics commitie that would shut him down but allow Zoe to live out her life. The idea was based on Rise of the Cybermen in Doctor Who where the Cybermen who were people's brains in robot suits were deemed emoral. The idea was quickly changed to reflect Zoe's position against Clarice Willow's virtual heaven in Caprica: Apotheosis in that the self destructive nature of the human race would quickly increase if imortality was achievable at the click of a mouse.
